There is a tailless thrush, that sits outside our long dining room window everymorning, and at dinner time. I have been giving it wetted bread, and some pet ,mince, and any other food that it might like.
It seems to stand back and let the sparrows and blackbirds eat first. Wondering how to encourage it closer. It looks up as if waiting for the food first thing in the morning. I also wet the garden and grass so it can look for food.
Has anyone made one a pet.?
Do Thrushes eat wild bird seed. ?

I have seen ones reared from chicks as pets. They can imitate human voice quite well

i made a pet of two blackbirds that got through the net incasing my louisa plum tree this afternoon, tried to teach them how to play badminton, they were the shuttlecocks!

I am feeding seed and fruit to our visiting birds. The thrush do not seem to go for the seed but love fruit - nice juicy pear, apples etc. I cube them into small pieces, plus obviously also providing water with it being so dry at present. For us it is the blackbirds that wait for food very close to the house and seem to be more trusting of people.

not at my house.

Revolting.

Ask in pets and animals, there are lots of people there who will know. Sounds like a baby, waiting to be fed.

LOL I made a bird feeder 2 weeks ago and filled it with different seeds and some sugar water. But the birds are all giving it a miss. Its well out of range of our cat but I'm wondering if its going to take one braver bird to start the ball rolling.

I too have a single thrush that comes into my garden and she also stands back and lets the sparrows, blackbirds, and any other birds eat first. I tend to throw some crumbs one way and all the sparrows go for that and then I throw something in a different direction for the thrush. I thought she was being a bit of a thicko but maybe it is just the breed - just not so pushy.

yes #10, that is exactly what happens and what I do too.

We had a vindictive thrush 2 years ago that systematically pecked every single grape on the vine. Didn't eat them, just a single peck each to make them all go rotten.
Malicious bloody bird. Still don't know what I did to piss it off.

My cat thinks I put the net up to save her stalking them.

Thrushes love snails. Leave some on/near a path etc, and watch them go, cracking the shells and scoffing the snail.

Worms are the best for it, wet a sack or old towel and throw that on the lawn, then in the morning, with the bird there remove the sack, and let it get the worms.

All my local birds are at least semi tame. And I get so much pleasure from them being around. Think it was blackbirds that did a couple of swoops at my Cat but she is just so not interest in chasing birds great mouser even takes on the odd possum But birds she's to well feed for chasing them. I have very, very friendly wood pigeons and she will come with me when I go up to them and talk to them, and even they are worried by her. I maybe the old bird lady I even bake extra bits of pastry and the likes for them rather than toss them out.

This is a juvenile rosella that is hanging around our place at the moment. He sits in the trees and makes funny noises, musn't have found his voice yet. Quite comical to watch him last night trying to work out the water bowl that overflows which all the birds love, there is also a birdbath close by if he is too scared.

harden up farmerjohn, don`t you have pest control on your farm?If i choose to grow a crop of fruit to feed my family and friends I am not going to stand by and watch it be decimated by birds, especially when I have left pollinator trees and other things for them.if they want to force their way through a total exclusure net to cause havoc they will pay the ultimate price.interestingly for me there have been no more intrusions?

A few summers back we used to go around Oriental Bay on a Saturday morning for a coffee and a muffin, and this little sparrow used to meet us every week, I don't know how it knew or remembered but it would be on the drivers mirror as soon as we pulled up. It was definitely the same sparrow not many will actually pop in your window and sit on your dash and eat from your hand, cheeky little thing it was I have photos I will have to hunt them out
