Getting Peas to germinate?

zl2adl, Nov 29, 5:01pm
Wonder if others have had their peas not germinating! I have planted 3 lots of two different brands and nothing. Is there something peas don't like! Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

I'd like to know too - planted 3 lots of sugar snap peas (out of the same Carnival brand packet) and only one pea shoot appeared but didn't grow bigger than about 3cms.

Do you think birds my have eaten them first!

Dont sew them too deep and sew about 5 in each spot or sew them thickly along the row and thin and transfer whatever comes through.

for the first time ever my second sowing of peas didn't germinate and I thought it might have been birds. They were heritage ones without that pink bird repellent on them,I sowed heritage corn as well and they didn't come up either

I have had the same problem this year.Decided to pop some beans on the trellis instead.I think there are only 3 plants from many planted and I did it at 3 different times as well.I don't think its the birds as there is one plant that is simply an inch tall and just hasn't moved. My corn all came up in the punnets - not one fail.Have planted some straight into the ground in amongst the seedlings - we shall see!

Put them in a jar of water overnite and then plant them.

Had no trouble with the peas all germinated.different story for my dwarf beans though, some came up and 1 whole row failed to appear.

my peas all germinating but not my beans.pulled couple seeds out and bugs had eaten them.

I had same thing with my peas too, took three lots of planting before I finally got a decent crop growing. Was quite frustrating as the peas were the 'easy-peazy' variety and were meant to be fool- proof!

My Kentucky beans were similar, usually get 10 out of 10 germinating first try, this year it was more like 5 out of 10. The upside is that with reseeding weeks apart means a longer harvest time!

I'm guessing a few cool/cold days after planting affected the seeds, being in Taupo this is to be expected - would have thought other warmer places should have faired better tho.

Sow. Sew involved thread and needles.

Mice will dig up peas and beans, and bugs eat them. Soak them overnight and germinate them in a tray, and then plant out the seedlings-protect from slugs and snails!

Your absolutely right!

Same here 3 lots the 3rd lot have just started to come thru not all of them only a few, They haven't been eaten cause I pushed away some soil and there they were

My mum said her late dad always soaked his pea seeds overnight before planting, so I tried it this year and it's made a huge difference to their germination.Definitely recommend it!

They have to be in constantly moist warm soil to germinate, although I am beginning to wonder how good some seed is as I have had a few no shows as well.

Have had a pathetic germination rate with my dwarf butter beans, for the third year in a row. I've used two different brands but with the same result, planted at right depth, watered enough and covered with a cloche. What are the seed companies up to. I've just bought seedlings to fill up the gaps.

lmwheeler, Dec 4, 5:20pm
Soak overnight or alternatively nick the seed casing.(I find with beans nicking works better than soaking, vice versa for peas.Nail clippers work well).I sow directly with half lemonade bottles over top as cloches - prevents seeds being eaten and protects young plants too.Kings Seeds are always good :)

Maybe people are watering them too much,Peas and beans tend to rot easily if too wet.

bellyatobhs, Dec 5, 1:35pm
True, soak seed overnight the plant and give a light water every second day, never had a problem with peas not germinating always follow this rule.

Well I am glad I am not the only gardener having trouble with peas. I will try the soaking overnight and see. The other thought i had was to sow them in seed raising mix, by making a trench and fill it with a couple of inches of mix then the seeds. My last effort produced 3 plants. Maybe frozen is best!
