Had one (solatube) installed a couple of years ago was $1300 all up. They are good for specific areas such as dark halls but I wouldnt put them in places like lounge or kitchen as the light is over bright and a bit artificial . Would prefer a reguar skylight for those places. Still each to his own.

we looked into it. total waste of time. Good over a chair where you want to sit and read a book.ok for a small hall or bathroom. but thats it. .So we fitted a 1 meter by 1 meter skylight and blew the ceiling out .cost $1800 . hole in lounge ceiling is about 3 meters by 3 meters, going up to window.

We put one in six years ago - can't remember the cost. Really good. At first we used to look for the switch, as we automatically wanted to turn the light out .

Ignore this. They light up a much larger area than that and would be ideal size and price wise for the OP's purpose.
