Certainly. You are fortunate, I've never seen one. Aseroe rubra, one of the Stinkhorn family. A bizarre fungi, rely on flies, attracted to the smell, to disperse spores. I've been a fan of fungi for many years, but have never seen one of these. On what sort of ground did you find it? Great pic.

Gosh it looks like one of the stinkhorn family. Lovely to look at but does it smell, does it have a nasty brownish " wetish poo" in the middle. These are fly pollinated and the "poo" lure is designed to attract flies, smells like rotting meat. Have not seen this particular form.

Agree Aceroe rubra Poster #2 have you never seen a stink horn or just not this form. I too am fascinated by fungi a much maligned and misunderstood but very important part of nature. You can always smell one before you find it. Yum, yum

Thanks for that, these were on a track in our native tree area, the stem is hollow no smell at all that I noticed anyway, very pretty though, by yum yum do you mean this is edible ?
I only noticed them because the one lying on its side had been knocked out of the ground and was more obvious,

Yum yum means they smell so, so bad that no one would want to eat them. sorry. But early maori use to eat basket fungus in the embryonic stage and I assume they are stink horn related as they have the same "poo" and the same stench.
