too late to plant bulbs?

i bought another hundred on here and planted yesterday, grower said they would be fine. Packaging says autumn when ground temp has dropped.

another month or two before too late, but even that is debatable, you will get a slightly poorer show if planted after August, but you will get a show, it will be slightly later too, and those bulbs will be later for about 3 yrs before the syncronise with the season properly

Thanks ill try and get them in this weekend

Mine have sprouted, they're an inch above the ground. So it must be a good time to plant new ones.

So are mine kaylin they were only planted about 3 weeks ago. I am not really expecting many if any flowers this year as I reckon I was a month too late planting them. They were bulbs that were just starting to sprout being sold off in Mitre 10.cheaper. Next year they should be good.

I am buying a new house, and settlement date is July. My first thought was, bother, I will miss putting some bulbs in! This is Wellington (lower hutt) . what do you think? I really wanted some for spring!

You can put in late flowering bulbs. Whatever flowers after July. Tulips maybe, or irises. It doesn't have to be daffodils. Gladioli flower in summer.

plant some now in 10 lt buckets, place in a warm spot, they will start well, when you get to the new place either place the buckets in holes down to lip level - or just sit the bucket on the ground or simply transplant them, if done with a little care they don't even check, they are certainly not fragile
you'll get a good show from the buckets and can move them to permanent placings after as per normal lift and divide

buckets may need a drainage hole in the bottom, I've found they don't though, you need to keep an eye on how much water they get from rain etc, I usually tip the bucket on its side the day after rain or watering for a day

Good idea re the bucket planting!
