Getting rid of borer

brummoi, Jun 3, 9:19pm
Hi. We have a lot of borer in the underflorr space of our 1950 house in welly. Area tends to be a bit damp but has good access for treatment. We had it professionally sprayed about 10 years ago but thinking it's time to do it again. Saw the following advice online but would appreciate any advice and suggestions from knowledgeable folks on here: http://www.kiwicare.co.nz/help/problem/?sid=borer

Is there any evidence of new borer activity? Little piles of frass, or sawdust are the giveaway. If not, I wouldnt worry about it.

yeah, they're active

Dampness is part of your problem as damp wood hastens the life cycle of the insect in the wood. Improve your underfloor ventilation, then get a pest controller in to treat underfloor with kero and ripcord, or something similar, solvent based. Don't faf about with borer bombs and water based maidens water.

Suit up, and use a garden sprayer and spray the wood with a thin mixture of Green Metalex and Diesel.

That sorts anything out.

Not so sure about stinking the house out with diesel but will look at options for improving ventilation and getting some solvent-based spraying underway. I'm assuming ventilation means passive airflow with enough unobstructed vents. Are there other options I should consider?

Used a garden sprayer a few years ago with a mix of concentrate product and turpentine. Did two coats and accidentally got some on pink batts. It stunk for weeks.

If it damp underneath, then first job must do is to improve the airflow under the house.

You can use turps with Metalex, but always reckon diesel does a better job, it evaporates off quite quickly.

Bit of smell for a few days, or borer problems, really its your choice.

Does Metalex have a label claim re its use in borer control?
