Govt Funded Elderly Housework help etc

lythande1, Sep 1, 3:31am
My mother - 82 and with severe, advanced spinal arthritis was receiving 1 hour a week housework services - funded until she went in to have surgery for endometrial cancer.

I came down and was shocked to see the absolutely filthy state of the house.
She had Homecare first, then this was changed to Access.

Neither cleaned properly at all. Half ass would be a kind description.

The bathroom floor was OK, and the actual hand basin itself. Everything else in that room was encrusted to 1/4 inch thick with scum and mould.
Likewise the kitchen - the splashback looked like the inside of an oven - brown goo all over.

The Homecare manager woman was quite snotty when I spoke to her - saying they are there to ensure a healthy, hygienic environment - well thats healthy - or hygienic?

I hired Dream Team Cleaning from Napier instead and this will continue for a few weeks until I cannot afford it.
My mother has said of Dream Team:

She has never seen anything like the two ladies today.
there isn't anything at all that they didn't clean.
they "flew around the house, and ate it clean".
as they went, they asked if she was happy with the job and cleaned off the steps.

(She spent a good 25 mins going on to me about how they cleaned x, y, z)

I said are they like those OCD cleaners on TV and she said she'd just about say they are.
She spent ages going on how marvellous it was.
she will be very happy for them to return.

I realise the funding will change in September and my mum will no longer receive any funded cleaning help at all, but really. who cares? None of them did what they are employed to do at all, and from what I saw, it was a complete waste of govt money anyway.

How could some one treat an oldy like that if I was in napier I would do it for you for free every one has or has had a grandmother

Why won't she be able to get funded help in September? My Mum always had a cleaner funded but the lady she had was great.

This is why:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standard/news/71448305/reduced-home-management-support-for-manawatu-elderly

They haven't said in the news Hawkes Bay yet, but the care people have said it already to her.
What do you bet it will be nationwide shortly.

Surely there must be funding for this -isn't it a lot cheaper for her to stay home than be in a rest home?

lythande1, Sep 1, 7:05am
Read the above link. It's not just Manawatu either.
No, it is not cheaper to be in a home either. 1)She isn't bad enough to need one 2)Look up the rules on that sort of thing too. I did, ages ago.
She owns a house, if sold it would get perhaps $140,000 after fees etc.
That puts her over the threshold for any govt or council places. It';s also not enough to buy into one of the others.
See? Catch 22 situation. What happens if she ever ends up needing it, I don't know. But meanwhile she is recovering and Dream Team are great.

Unfortunately cleaners that do household management as they call it are restricted in what they clean. They will usually get a list to only clean certain things, so leave a lot out that you and I would clean. Also they are often expected to go from A to B within the time that is allocated to clean, I understand they aren't allocated driving time. Some people are lucky and get someone who goes above and beyond what they are meant to do.

In our area 1/2 hour is the max you can get. They will only clean the bath, toilet. Only dust and vacuum bedroom used, kitchen lounge etc. Any extra rooms are a no no. Now even doing all that it cannot be done in 1/2 hour if you want a good job doing. I guess its better than nothing but in my mind it is not hygenic.

What a great opportunity to get your kids involved in helping others! I know people are time poor these days, but I guess families need to step up to the mark sometimes. We always used to. What's changed?

My kids? My kid is 37 and lives, as I do in Auckland. Also he is at work - leaves at 5am gets home at 6:30pm.

My mum is in Hawkes Bay.
