Would anyone be able to advise on how much it would cost to skim-coat a 4 x 3 room that has had wallpaper and painted over. (Wellington) Thanks

Too many variables for anyone to give you an accurate guess.
The main one depending on whether the wall paper has to come-off or not.

You could try with a wet sponge or paint roller to try wet/saturate the wallpaper first on a large area;
If bubbles appear the paper will have to be removed.

I had a similar problem, took a photo and put the job up on builders crack. it was the first time I had used this service and I was wrapt! I had 8 tradies email me within 30 minutes. you get to read all their feedback, so you can choose the best for the job. The guy I got came the next day, (Friday)quoted a great price and was back on Monday to do the job. it was only one long, very rough wall, with a high stud and it only cost $250

That's really cheap us he still in business? Did he pay tax? You need to remove wallpaper otherwise the plaster pulls it off because it stays wet for so long. You need two coats to look any good

Yes he is and yes he pays tax and yes builders crack is a monitored sight. And yes I had removed all of the painted wallpaper and he only did one coat and it is as smooth as a baby's bum

Gibstopper started today. The wall is covered in painted wallpaper - probably painted over three times - lots of bubbles. His quote is $800 for three layers he says. The first layer looks almost non-existent. Hope it turns out OK.

So did they remove the wallpaper first?

It's a big gamble for him if it all bubbles he has to rip it off and start again make sure you don't pay him till he's finished I wouldn't take the risk if I was him.
