Tool from an earlier era. Help will be appreciated. I live in Hamilton.

if old handle broken off, just burn it out if you have to, cut or grind off the rivet, or bolt, fit new handle, drill hole and put new screw or bolt.in.

As above but when refitting the new handle, hold the head up & hang the handle end on on the ground/ concrete/ wood block to hammer the head on.
If it's not fitting correctly & needs a shave then tap the head back off & file the handle a little bit till it's right.
Be aware tho that they NEED to be a tight fit.

What he said but after fitting immerse the shovel head in a bucket of water overnight, making sure the part of the handle that fits into the head is fully immersed.
It's an old contractors trick, the wood expands with the moisture and although it will shrink slightly when it dries out it will never return to it's original size.
It works amazingly well, just make sure you give the head a quick squirt of CRC when it comes out of the water.

Have you got a "Mens Shed " up there, they love doing those lttle jobs.
Good luck.

Yep, you have got a Men's shed.
Google Mens shed Hamilton.

Handles need to be fitted with the grain orientated correctly, otherwise the strength in the direction of the normal strain on the handle, will be less that it should be.

Brilliant! Many thanks for all your good suggestions, very much appreciated. Being a pen pusher, I'm not so skilled~

Awesome. you're never too old to learn something new!

why. Unless you are in love with this shovel you you will proberly find you can buy a brand new shovel with handle for less than a handle on it's own.

Suggest you do not burn the handle out of the spade/shovel. Although you may be successful in cleaning out the old wood, in the process of using fire you will destroy the tensile strength of the metal.
It will never ever be the same unless treated by reheating and quenching in an oil bath.

There's a good trick! I have learnt something.

Good on you.
That's one more person that leaves the old, well-made tools in the second-hand stores for me!
Usually, the oldies are much better-made, often better designed, use thicker gauge, better quality steel, and are much easier to keep sharp. Add a new, good quality handle, and you have a friend for life!

Can't beat an old Wheel brand shovel
