You used to be able to buy a stretchy thing with 4 hooks that clipped onto the plate & a hanger gizmo at the back . hope you get the gist. I'm pretty sure that Mitre 10 or Bunnings would still have them.
eta . like these
http://www.framesplus.co.nz/plate-hangers-wire-spring-size-1.html or there are discs with a hook that are attached to the back of the plate like these & I'm sure they are available here. http://www.dischangers.com/

You can buy linen discs with a very strong glue and a D ring. They come in different sizes for different sized plates. They can be removed by soaking in hot water if you want to remove the disc for any reason but are VERY SECURE when plate is hung. Also, no gold edging is damaged by clips as in other methods. They are completely invisible when plate is hanging. Stevens sell them as do antique shops and places where china is purchased.
Just looked at the second link above and that is them

I agree, anything that is stuck on the back and hung by way of a hook is better than those sprung wire frame holders. In the quakes I have quite a few friends who lost precious plates that were attached by the wire thingies, as the plates were chipped and rocked around in those frames during the tremors and aftershocks, either cracking or chipping them. Friend of mine just had all her's on picture hooks, the most lightweight of hooks on the walls and none broke.
