I seem to remember my neighbour doing his with a "blonding" process and I don't think it involved getting rid of the varnish first.

Why not contact Lockwood itself - they do "blonde" finishes now, but obviously this varnish removal question has come up before - maybe they have the answers. Capricorngirl
