Rhubarb

Any rhubarb experts here? We have several clumps, have tried them in the sun, out of the sun, part-shade, etc., and can't persuade them to grow to more than about 6 inches, and very thin stalks. What do they like best?

Rhubarb is a gross feeder. It needs heaps of manure. Thin stalks indicate no or not enough fertilizer.
And, it needs water - lots of it in summer months. With food food food!

My rhubarb grows in hard dry unweeded ground next to a block fence and I have to slash it down all the time it is in direct sunlight so maybe that's what they like.

Ours is like a weed, comes a live in spring and goes nuts until winter.
Apart from watering its not really cared for at all

Part shade & I dump grass clippings around it. Seems to love them.

My rhubarb is massive ! But then we've got the perfect soil and heaps of organic matter is added to the soil each year. Getting your soil right is the key to getting stuff to grow.

I don't do anything to mine. same soil since I planted it 11 years ago. grows all year long. And it has multiplied probably 20 times the size it was.

It get no feeding and only occasionally a water. thrives on being ignored.

Mine is in a pot - heavy on the sheep pellets and handfuls of slow release regularly. Big fat stalks.

I cooked some for puds tonight - very yummy with custard & cream :-) I read to cook it in a red jelly to give it more colour. Only used half a packet of jelly as I like it to have plenty of tartness - colour was good.

My plants get the afternoon sun and do well with plenty of horse manure & lots of water.
