What is a good variety to buy - one that the flowers dont drop off or go brown?

Well, if the flowers are dropping off and going brown before even opening, the chances are you have Camellia Flower Blight.

There is, unfortunately, little you can do to remedy the situation and given that it is a fungal thing that has now invaded many parts of the country - any new plants will be just as prone to it as the old ones. It only affects the flowers, not the plant as a whole, but given that that is half the beauty of them, that is no real remedy. You'll just have to find other shrubs to take their place, I'm afraid. Sorry.

Debbie is a lovely double pink one with long lasting flowers.

Autumn flowering ones are your best bet, eg: Sasanquas. Or try the Paradise series.

San Dimas is flowering in my garden now, lovely big red with a yellow centre, seems to flower for months Lots of pretty shades to choose from, pink being most prominent, but theres creams, reds, whites and the odd reddy burgundy colouring. But if they are healthy, yes they do fall and brown off, but once your camellia gets to a decent size, I have found that the outside branches etc, shelter the inner and seem to stop a lot of that browning, protect the majority, and you get a far better season.
