Success with ant bait? Rentokil?

customise84, Jun 3, 8:37pm
We have got a real issue with ants (through hubbys car when he opened it up the other day, all of a sudden they are inside, everywhere! I think he disturbed a nest when doing work under the floor the other day?)
And previously I've tried using the no more ants, but never had success.
Has anyone used the rentokil bait you can buy at mega?

Have used the following recipe for the last 50 years, never fails:

DO NOT USE WOOD OR PLASTIC UTENSILS !

1 pint water
Dissolve
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon honey
1 tablespoon borax }
1 tablespoon boracic acid } from Chemist's

Boil all together, cool and bottle.
Put into milk bottle tops where ants are evident. We also put it in the tops and place it around the top plate in the basement about twice a year.

"Top plate" the wood beam which runs around the top of our concrete block basement wall.

Ants eat anything - sweet and savoury.
Baits will not kill all the ants in a nest, many do not even get any of the bait bought back.
You can try another bait (check the ingredients first). Borax will not kill an ant - it is used in washing powder, as a food additive (in some places) etc.

Either way, unless you kill the whole nest they can and likely will come back.

In a car though, not too hard to get them out.
Clean it out thoroughly, make sure there are no crumbs of anything edible in it. No food = no ants.
Flyspray works. doesn't last long term, but if you clean up, then spray it should fix a problem in a car.

lyathande1 says, "Borax will not kill an ant" but BORACIC ACID and Borax does, the above recipe has worked for us for over 50 years! Google Boracic Acid etc., Lots of information there about ants and boracic acid and borax. Using homemade boric acid ant killer, is a slow-acting poison, and each ant that takes it back to the colony shares it with only a few other ants. It might take a while for the poison to reach the queens, which can effectively kill the colony. It should take only a few days for you to notice a reduction in the number of ants near the bait, but it could take three to four weeks to completely eradicate the colony causing your problems. Change the bait every few days to keep it fresh.

Borax and boric acid are not the same thing.

Consumer magazine ant killer recipe

You can make your own version of the ant killer using a recipe originally published as below:

This formula attracts the ants who eat it and then return to to the nest where they subsequently die. The other ants in the nest eat the dead ones to tidy up and they in turn die. Eventually the whole nest is killed off.

To make approximately 250ml

250 ml (1 cup) water
200gm sugar
25 gm (2 sp) honey
25 gm borax (usually only obtainable from a pharmacy)
25 gm boric acid (usually only obtainable from a pharmacy)

Heat the water and dissolve the honey and sugar in it to make a syrup.
Bring the syrup to near boiling point and dissolve the borax and boric acid in it.
Allow to cool and make sure all solids have dissolved.

Place the syrup into shallow jar lids, or small medicine bottles lying on their sides, or similar, on the ant trails. Dribble a little of the syrup over the edge of the lids onto the trails to ensure the ants find it. Once found, the ants will usually gather in large numbers to feed on the syrup. Do not clear away the gathered ants but allow them to finish feeding and return along the trails to the nests. They should disappear completely in a couple of days.
Do not allow domestic animals to eat the syrup - if necessary cover the syrup with a larger jar or clear dish with an edge propped up by matchsticks to allow access only to ants.

Nobody said they were. The recipe contains Both.

Yes I got that recipe from the DSIR (that is what they used to be called)
but interesting enough they explained there are two different types of ant.
The sweet eating ones and the savoury eating ones. The latter mainly stay outside and nest in plant pots etc.
With the savoury eating ones replace the sweet ingredients with some smooth peanut butter, you might also get the odd rodent. Keep well away from pets also.

Now all we need is a decent recipe for fly spray.

The best thing for ants in your car is let off a Raid insect/borer bomb can in the garage, no more ants, you can buy these in the supermarket.
