Cat deterrent please

isiqualo, Feb 16, 3:15pm
one of my neighbours cat has starting using my newly prepared garden bed as his personal toilet. How do I stop it. I've sprinkled pepper/chilli powder, coffee grounds but this has not been effective enough. I seem to be surrounded by bloody useless cats.
( & no. I'm not a cat lover because cats have staff. dogs have owners.) So I would welcome any effective tried and tested suggestions to stop this cat/s behaviour on my property before I resort to a more permanent solution.

Can you plant little sticks at regular intervals? It works because they haven't enough room to dig between sticks. if the area isn't too big to drive you mad. Otherwise lie in wait and hose the cat every time it looks like getting into your garden.

. hmm sounds like a good idea. I might sharpen the ends pointing upwards as well to make my "point " very clear eh?
couple of set mouse traps might help as well .Hosing them is good but they come around at night while we are asleep or busy inside. Its only by chance that I spot them leaving or entering.

Same problem here, I have a dog but, unfortunately, she is best mates with next doors cat so cat has free reign in my vegie garden. Last year I bought some granules, which smelled strongly of citrus, from the garden centre and they were very effective but when I went to buy more garden centre said they were no longer available. I have tried moth balls, orange peel, lemon peel, pepper and nothing is really very effective. Only solution I think is find a savage dog which is not cat friendly. No, no only joking wouldn't be without my little mate.

I have JUST bought and put down some stuff I saw at the $2 shop so will see how that goes for my Dog who like eating off any vines in my garden.

vicks vapour rub, spread some on some stones and place face down (ie side with the vicks on downward so it won't wash off) around garden

If you want sharp sticks buy the packs of skewers from the supermarket. I've tried those, chilli powder, vicks and a cat trap. The trap works best (followed up by a nice clean up for the cat with the hose).

vicks on stones? Now who would have guessed that one. brilliant. and packs of skewers are just the right stuff as well . Never thought of that. Here I was contemplating cutting up dowels and sharpening them. excellent ideas guys thanks. I will get right into it now. I also like the cat trap. Where do you get them?

The skewers / sticks will not be strong enough. Cats will break them. If you want to try them though, the $2 is the cheapest place for them. I had a lot of grapefruit that fell off the trees. To use them all I squeezed the juice over the areas cats were using. That stopped them only until juice washed away. Same with moth balls, ether (Vicks), etc. Water is great, if you can hit them with it. They clue up fast. Wire mesh laid down is great as they cannot scratch it. Didn't realise you could get cat traps (other than from SPCA).

That white stretchy orchard netting is good too. Get some tension on it and secure to ground level with pegs, stones etc. Sprinkler on at night time helps deter them. Best thing here is the dog .It's like someone said to me recently, 'We don't crap in their Go-cat packet, why would we tolerate cat crap in our food chain?' That lady sends the craps back to the cats domain, up and over her fence with an athletic flick of a trowel.

Pepper has always worked for me but you have to repeat it every day for a week or so until they find another place to go and give up.

Sheep manure/pellets seem to work for me. I never get cats digging in the vege beds. Someone told me it was the manure, but to this day I'm not 100% sure it's not just well behaved neighbourhood cats.

Do this with skunk shot and it works brilliantly!

pauline999, Feb 16, 11:50pm
prickly prunings from rose bushes criss crossed over the area keeps them off.

I've tried everything mentioned above and it all works for a while. The only real success story was with black nylon bird netting. I stuck bamboo stakes into the ground, slipped the netting over it, and pegged it into place on the stakes with plastic clothes pegs.
Of course this also serves to keep the birds from pecking bits out of the young greens when you plant them.

The cheapo bamboo skewers from low cost clutter shops are great.

issymae, Feb 17, 2:17am
had netting over veges in planter boxes till they got taller and filled in the area; kept cats off and also white butterfly

mothballs

redden39, Feb 19, 5:53pm
Skunk Shot. Bought it at Mitre 10. Not cheap and stinks to high heaven so you don't want it near windows but it worked until my plants got established. There has been a thread before about this and I remember someone saying you can buy motion detection sprayer things that squirt anything that moves near the sensors with water.

Keep you old tea bags, dry them off then soak in citronella oil, can by this from the warehouse, then put round edge of gardens,

cantabman1, Feb 22, 1:36pm
If you know anyone with a dog, then put some of their do do's around the garden.Cat will think twice before calling again.I have some free here, if you want some.

daryl14, Feb 22, 2:48pm
I bought a trap off here and used it to capture a stray tomcat that was doing ones and twos all over my place.

Borrow a dog for a while.
