If it is a Rhus (which I don't think it is as your plant has serrated leaf edges)be VERY careful as they can cause extremely painful skin reactions in some people.

Looks a lot like the leaves of my bignonia which most definitely has that suckering habit - but I wouldn't describe the orange flowers as "feathery". They are pretty though.

Thanks for the suggestions, will show my neighbour, I haven't seen it flower, so now have some suggestions for her. Also wondering if it is "tree of heaven" , as per doc weeds website.The fun part of clearing an old garden is discovering all these plants that we don't know the names of. Will be wary of it koru67 just in case.

I'm with Bignonia. Had a massive one at last house. Trumpet-ish orange/red flowers in groups.
