I bought a cap gun in the hope that as people had been shooting at them since May 1st they would think that I was actually shooting at them too and go somewhere else.
However, it doesn't make enough of a bang to scare them. Anyone got any tricks from childhood to make the bang sound louder? TIA.

backfire your car a few times

Use a real gun?

kenw1, May 23, 3:24am
They are really difficult to deal with, the only solution is a permanent one. A 12g will do it, but you need good size pellets to get through their heavy duty feathers.

How about sticking an S on the end when talking plural and they will run away in shock at your lack of PCness

Do you know anyone on the vineyard industry and borrow/hire their gas operated bangers for a week or two, they would not be using them at this time of the year with no grapes growing.

owen106, Jun 8, 9:03pm
My thoughts exactly. Just because Maoris didn't invent "s" doesn't mean we can't use it.

Yep back in the bad old days when I was living in the country they used to shoot them and then hang them on the fence to try to discourage them

From memory apart from reducing them by the number killed it didn't really make a difference

They wouldn't be so bad if they were palatable
You know the story
Boil them for 3 days with a large rock
throw away the bird and eat the rock it will be less chewy

called swamp hens in Australia.

gammelvind, Jun 9, 8:18am
Sorry guys shooting isn't an option unless it is during the duck season and you have a shooting license as they are still a game bird.
Suggest you find a friendly orchard and see if you can hire a bird scarer off them.

Ever tried them in a crock pot with a heap of veges? Wish I could get hold of some,I'm to old now for galloping around the country shooting them.

Get a Jack Russell; not joking you can train them to go after pukeko.

buzzybee1, Jun 14, 6:13am
Just heard on radio, some grapegrowers are starting to use drones to scare birds away from the vines. Just a thought

set a old large bucket up on a couple of blocks , then hit the bottom of that , makes a good noise, may be enough to frighten them off.

bobwyn, Jun 14, 7:25am
My foxy hates Pukekos he gets them drags the into the creek and drowns them.

jackiechan3, Jun 15, 1:57am
run on foot sreamming at them or yes set the cat or dog on them.

kam04, Jun 15, 3:04am
What about the word sheep. What's the singular and plural for this word?

portly, Jun 15, 6:07am
Shang eye / slingshot is what I use, they have learnt to stay on other side of road. The Jack Rascal is only allowed to chase Pukekos

rojill, Jun 26, 12:00pm
Incorrect.
They are protected, unless you get a license to shoot. This unlimited license is available from DOC Area offices and is free of charge. It is available 12 months of the year. If you get caught shooting without this license then it's BIG bucks. Suggest also that during the breeding season you keep an eye open for eggs - they don't support heavy boots too well.

Generally speaking Pooks have a set area. their area/territory. Even if you caught them and took them miles away. most will find their way back. You need to learn to live with them and wait until duck shooting season. and even then you can only shoot them on the wing.

On another note, the ones we had did get ticked off when we blocked off their access. Built a fence and put chicken wire all the way around to keep our chickens in. and so blocking their "track". they did slowly disappear

gammelvind, Jun 27, 7:36am
Interesting, this is what I found on the DOC site tee Pukeko.
http://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/pukeko/

No mention of any unlimited licence that I could find, but you may have access to other information.

I know plenty of people that head shot them with a slug gun. Vermin

hammer23, Jul 7, 11:36am
Put up a sign saying ,NO PUKEKOS ALLOWED. Two things will happen, they will stay away and you will be in the paper for being a racist.
