Anyone with keypad locks? What do you think?

dabo, Jul 18, 6:27am
We are thinking of getting keypad locks and I am seeking opinions and thoughts. Do you change the combination at all (i.e. 6 mthly) is it really easier than using a regular key? More secure, less secure? What brand do you have? TIA

We have them on our garages, makes it no hassle if someone needs to pick something up rather than leaving keys out.
Not much good with no power though

Were suggested to me by the police recently.

Are you looking at electronic or mechanical?

We have a mechanical digital lock on the front door, it really does make life easier and we no longer have to replace lost keys. There are no numbers on the actual keys to make wear patterns, so it would be pretty hard to guess the number.

We have a mechanical (non powered) one, I like not having to carry a key, but do worry about forgetting the code!

I think just a mechanical one. Are they reliable?

We have a keypad outside that opens our garage door.

Only had ours in for about three years, so can't comment long term but so far have experienced no issues. And that's with a cheap, no-name lock. I'd imagine a Lockwood or Schlage etc would be even better

No problems or reliability concerns with ours. Only concern I can see is it's not easy to enter the code in the dark, where a key you can usually manage it by feel.

Suppose the mechanical one you could too with some practice, though.

Yes I like the idea of not having to take a key when I go for a run, or if DH goes for a kayak etc. Thanks for the feedback - very helpful and we'll go ahead with one.

YES - key pad locks are the best and secure. So hassle free. Had it put in last year on front door. Mechanical 4 digit combo. No problem seeing numbers in the dark. I watched the lock smith install it. He left me the instructions. About 6-8 months later I wanted the combo changed and he came back and showed me how to do it. It entails unscrewing lock covering from the inside, taking out mechanism and changing numbers. I am now confident to change the combo whenever I like plus I save the call out fee of approx $50 for locksmith to do it. I am persuading my Mum to get a key pad lock for her home as she sometimes loses her keys

We have a keypad lock and it's great. Every so often well change the combination, which is pretty easy to do. Only put it on as young daughter was constantly losing keys so we reckon 1/2 of Christchurch has our front door key!

Having used a mechanical lock on a door that was used by many many people day in a day out they do work well. As for forgetting your code, well interestingly as long as you put the four digits you choose in any sequence it worked. And locks only keep honest people out, there's only a few mm of glass stoping their entrance if they really want in.

4 digits out of 10 gives 210 combinations. Someone could guess in 10 minutes.
I was wondering about having an alarm sound for a wrong digit.
