I do remember having both kowhai and very similar natives, but have lost the labels off them

all look like kowhai to me, there is often some variation in seedlings which would explain the minor differances

There's more than one type of Kowhai, have a read of this site. The main ones we sold in the plant nursery were microphylla and tetraptera (often called South Is and North Is Kowhai)
ok, thanks. what would be the other native with similar leaves to the kowhai? was I thinking corokia?

They look to me like the miniature Kowhai, or very similar plant that they have growing in the native bird enclosure at Hamilton Zoo. They have a similar shaped and coloured flower to the normal Kowhai only about a fifth of the size. Looks like a bonsaied Kowhai tree.

As the seller of these I can reliably tell you they are all Sophora microphylla. They were sold as 2nds a year or 2 ago. Until this year we have not grown the dwarf or the North Island variety.
