Stage 2 Gibstopping

jh34, Jul 20, 7:43pm
I put one layer of Gib Plus 4 and tape. The tape is fiberglass left over from a previous job. I found the second layer problematic as it went on stiff and thick. Yesterday I sanded (using p120). I read below to check it with a light and now I see blemishes and scratches including tape fibres in places. I'm using a 50, 75,150mm and float.
Having read below I'll mark the bad bits, mix some water with the Plus 4 and go over it again?
This is an old house and I've been putting insulation in the walls. I didn't replace all the gib in the room (just outer wall area) so some of it is the older fibrous type which sits proud.

I'm wondering where to after this. I used to put blank wall paper on and paint?
Thanks

Use a topping coat to skim over, this sands easily & has the texture like butter once "tooled"up,your problem is not unusual when trying to patch into old fibrous plaster, also using a wide sanding blade & just feather back the edges. On a verticle plan indegresions are a bit harder to pick, still a great result is still achievable if you are patient & willing to make to effort

Should have started with trade set then top coated with plus 4.

So you've taped joins in fibrous plaster board with FibaFuse using Plus 4?
If so I don't think an air-drying compound like Plus 4 is the right thing to use with glass tape - it's too soft. If you use a setting compound (Tradeset), then once it's set/dry, and loose fibres etc from either tape or the board should cut off without tearing the surface using 180 grit.

Agree with #3 but too late now.

Watering down the +4 is really necessary for second coating over +4 . or a third.

Also, since you have already sanded it's important to remove the dust; I would run a very wet sponge along the joints before re-coating, couple of times if needed.

for final sanding use 180 or 220 sand paper, not 120.

In your previous thread you said right at the start that you had Tradeset90. Why didn't you use it?

^^
I hope for OP's sake it isn't too late. I don't fancy the chances of plus 4 with glass tape lasting very long in fibrous plasterboard joins.

I just looked at the other thread, and I think that was someone else. OP did post at the end - from that I'm guessing that he's joining Gib to existing fibrous plasterboard - not something I've had great success with. New fibrous plasterboard is available and great stuff to work with, but it's very bloody expensive - about $100 / sheet. Thickness will always vary a bit, as it's cast in moulds.

The guy at Placemakers just handed me Plus 4. At that time I was picking up the Gib and I hadn't researched it properly.

You're right. Someone else's thread.

Glass tape is great for joining to fibrous plaster. I usually use cove bond for the first coat as it is even stronger than tradeset.

As for the problems with thicknesses, easier to pack out the new gib when fixing, rather than try and fill an out of level joint. However, it can still be achieved with the right compound - and plus 4 ain't the one.

that wasn't me.

if I paper it it should be o.k?

plus 4 is the TOPPING PLASTER for the LAST coat, it isn't for the first to 3rd coats as it is an air dry plaster designed for VERY thIn feathering coats, your best to scrape it all out and use the tradeset to put the tape on. it wont last at all because if theres any movement it will crack/fall out. funny how people buy it to plaster the joints-must be cos its pre mixed, also that's why it looks shit after sanding, because it takes AGES to dry, bet it was clogging up the sandpaper real quick aswell

According to Gib, it is fine for all coats including taping, up to 1mm thick. However it is certainly not the first choice for professionals because of the longer drying time.

I bought some finer (180) sand paper and that seemed to clean it up. I have another pale of Gib 4 also. I hear there is a resene product you can paint on that will cover blemishes? Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer?

What do you call "blemishes"?

Those types of sealers are only for smoothing out sanding marks. Any bigger than that you need to get your Plus4 out and carry on.

Blemishes are scratches, ridges.
I have it fairly even now I have given it a skim coat (or I think I have)? The thickness varies (light layer).
