Guava moth in Feijoas

Had this problem for the first time last year. Ideas needed on what to do this year and when should I start?

Nothing you can do. If you made sure you picked up ALL the fruit, and disposed of it well away from your place, that is about all you can do. If your neighbour failed to do so then you will have lots of trouble this year.

The infestation seems to come and go. Sometimes we get just about all our fruit infested. Sometimes hardly any. Sometimes up to half. It's a bit of a lottery. And I have a neighbour who does pick up all his fruit.

Here's some ideas from the Northland Regional Council http://www.nrc.govt.nz/Environment/Weed-and-pest-control/Pest-insects/Guava-moth/ They can get pretty expensive and labour intensive.

Oh. Not so good. Thank you for your comprehensive answer. Did get rid of the fruit so fingers crossed for this year. Cheers.

I think it was in a NZ Gardener that there was an article about using a solar powered lamp in a bottle with a couple of holes cut out of the bottle (plastic) and putting oil in the base - attracts the moth which gets stuck. The lamp (about $2 at the Warehouse) fits in the top of the bottle. There was someone in Kerikeri making them. Perhaps a person more computer savvy than I could find the article.

The cheap solar lights work but you need to tape blue colour over the bulb as thats the color that attracts the moth. My sister and her husband did this at Paihia. tricky to cut the holes in the plastic tho. but it works.

Thank you, certainly seems to have a lot of support for this method(with the blue light). Luv my fejoas but don't need the protein. Cheers.
