Who's removed downlight fittings and put in LEDs?

daryl14, Jan 22, 12:35am
Am thinking of doing this. Buying from offshore. Looks like they're around 10-20 bucks each. I see you can get dimmable and non.

Any other tips or best sites to go looking at? My downlights seem to have approx 125mm hole through ceiling. Would like to be able to insulate over top of them. Cheers all.

I wouldn't be buying them from overseas as it is doubtful that they will be certified for use in NZ. Also doubtful that they will be suitable for covering with insulation, which is the most important part.

You can buy a full kit, sealed IC rated (covered) LED fitting and driver, from around $40 trade price. You might need a flange kit to suit that larger hole, or you might need a slightly more expensive fitting to fit that hole.

Check these guys. What you need is "IC rated" to be able to cover with insulation. (the driver unit can not be covered though).

40 bucks is a bit steep when I have 25 of these in my house. But I hear what you're saying re: IC rated. Cheers.

You also need to have the 'Supplier Declaration of Conformity' if you are going to get an electrician to install them. I wasn't given this when I bought my lights and so had to retrospectively go back to the retailers to get them. This was a couple of years ago so perhaps they now give them to you at time of purchase.

Active electrical wholesalers stock a budget IC rated led downlight which should meet your requirements.

There's a place in Onehunga Auckland that does led downlights for $20ea. Maybe less if you buy 25.They sell here on trademe .brighthome

My electrician did it for me recently, each fitting was $45, and there was no issue swapping them over.

Also check the distance between from the hole to any timber, then check your new lights can be that close

The best thing we ever did - our electrician got hold of some for us at a reduced rate.

This trader "vinces " on TM has good prices for certified fittings, I have recently changed some in my house and am happy with the look and quality of the fittings

F tophat rating is the completely coverable ones. F in a triangle pointing down.
IC80 and IC135 cannot be covered and cant have material that will combust at 80deg and 135deg respectively pushed up to them.
All new light fittings must have an IC rating.

johotech, Jan 23, 4:42am
You need to check your facts.

IC80 and IC135 aren't real ratings. You are thinking of CA ratings.

IC and IC-F are the ratings for fittings covered or abutted with 90degC insulation.

vivac, Jan 23, 1:36pm
Sorry you are correct, it was a bit late I think. CA was the rating I was thinking of.

Make sure you get it done from a registered electrician.
House fire was started in Hawkes Bay about 15 years ago 1 person died started from a down light.

I have replace about half of our baynet cap bulbs with L.E.D lamps.I got them thru Alli barber landed for about $3.50 each.

alibaba.com perhaps?

I replaced one light in the hall that remains on all night. The light fitting had cracked and the electrician recommended LED. Supply was from a large local electrical supply store. The LED came with a 10 year warranty.
If you know where your local electricians get supplies from, go there and ask to see their LED selection.

I bought a flat disk light about 25cm round, 6-7cm thick. Total price was about the same as buying a brand new dome light fitting and getting it installed. LED lights don't need a back reflector part like halogen downlights. You could get an LED BULB that fits into a standard recessed light fitting, or you could simply buy the LED as a single unit.

I have contacted a seller on alibaba and it looks like I can get an IC-F AS/NZS rated led downlight landed here with GST paid for 23 bucks each. Sounds good!

All you need now is the SDOC.

rlr29, Jan 28, 7:30pm
Trademe goons SWARM!

daryl14, Jan 28, 7:33pm
I have the test reports for the units but it appears the sdoc is supplied by the nz importer i.e me. So will I have to fill out the sdoc and submit it in order to fit these in my house? I am looking at HT-THE15WAC

johotech, Jan 28, 10:40pm
Creating an SDOC is not something you can just DIY. It requires testing from a certified lab (or something along those lines).

Technically, you don't actually require one, as you are the end user and not on-selling them to someone else. However good luck finding an electrician who will install them without an SDOC.

Thanks for your help Jonotech. I will do some more homework before committing to buy.
