Neighbours cat sprayed my expensive curtains.

kiwigoldie, Nov 20, 7:14pm
.any ideas on the best way to clean them!.I dont particularly want to have to take them to dry cleaners as worry about damage.

cinderellagowns, Nov 20, 7:35pm
I'd be talking to my insurance company if they were expensive curtains.

dms01, Nov 20, 7:42pm
depends what your curtains are made of
most curtains have the cleaning symbols and material printed on the selvedge

mokaumoi, Nov 20, 7:46pm
Worth reading here- a lot depends on the fabric, and also the colour.

Insurance as I've heard you can't get rid of smell.

dms01, Nov 20, 7:52pm
well, you can in most cases. If the fabric can handle it, diluted white vinegar kills cat wee smells very effectively. I used to foster cats so I ought to know!

mokaumoi, Nov 20, 7:53pm
Well you can ,with baking soda and white vinegar, but again, depends on the fabric. There is a formula on the link I posted.

Nonsense. Time if nothing else works. But simple washing removes it.

kiwigoldie, Nov 21, 7:51pm
thanks, i might ring the insurance company before I try to clean them to check that they will be still covered if I try to clean them myself. As they are professionally made curtains they dont have a label and they are a modern shiny type fabric.

bluefrog2, Nov 21, 9:29pm
But first, Shoot the cat.

woody89, Nov 22, 6:03am
If the modern shiny fabric is taffeta, it washes like a rag. Better yet it doesn't require ironing. I've had to wash several large & expensive taffetacurtains due to red wine, cats & other mishaps.

We had a cat break in and spray on our curtains (they are taffeta and it came out fine with no smell left) was disgusting though!

+1. Dirty stinking things. Why do people put up with this!

My cat has peed in my pot plant, will white vinegar diluted get rid of smell, or would it kill the plant. It is in a large planter so will cost a packet to replace it.

jhan, Nov 22, 12:10pm
I'm afraid that they are had it and will need to be replaced. Cat urine is very damaging and the smell is very difficult to remove. You may think its gone and then the room gets a little damp and hey, the smell's back. If you go through your insurance company, they will send in the cleaners and it may or may not work. Then you may have to replace them anyway.

We got rid of the smell of cat pee very successfully just with white vinegar and a couple of washes. It wasn't my cat either, which is more annoying.
You can just go to Spotlight or the fabric shop and look for your fabric to get care instructions.

Many years ago we rehomed an unneutered male cat. It was Summer. The first thing he did was spray the entire house from top to bottom, furniture, carpets, drapes. We thought the house was totalled. My wife used the white vinegar in warm water trick and it literally disappeared immediately. Most impressed. The smell never came back and the cat was neutered faster than the speed of light and luckily never ever sprayed again. We still have him, bless his wee soul.
