dam cats in the street leaving deposits in my garden ,will it help it or hurt it!

gyrogearloose, Nov 18, 9:07pm
I wouldn't grow root crops, but above ground crops like peppers are fine. I've dug in used kitty litter for years without any trouble.

The little holes they dig aren't a problem, don't sweat any damage.

cool thanks :)

Some people get all worked up about cats toileting in their gardens. Just accept that it happens. I agree don't sweat any damage that happens. You may as well get all worked up about the rain or the sun.

yes its great when you have just sown rows of seeds and some feral cat comes and poos in the middle of it and digs everything up.
gin traps work well,no repeat visits

Throw it in the compost bin, after 6 months to a year & a good spade turning over (golly gosh . it's what happens when you dig the compost out of the bin), who's going to know or care or even be able to detect it.
It all turns to dirt over time, no matter what it was, or who ate it.

Not exactly amazing but it certainly doesn't hurt, self digging too (by cat)

actually cat poop breaks down in the garden within a few days - any poop is fantastic. I use dog poop, and everything grows like triffids.Really it's just sausages of fresh blood n bone.

pugswal, Nov 19, 4:46am
Try putting those wooden kebab sticks at angles along the rows (or twigs). The cats won't dig there!

steptoesnr, Nov 19, 7:38am
The only reason not to use catshit is if you don't like the idea.

junie2, Nov 19, 8:15am
I wouldn't even consider using cat poo - or dog. . There's a world of difference between the faeces of meat-eaters and vegetarians, in terms of its bacteria/bugs etc etc. It's pretty obvious from its smell that carnivores' manure isputrid and germy. Horse and cow by comparison just smells like rotting grass/hay. I will use pig and chicken in smaller quantities but never near edibles when it is less than a yr or two old. But I would rather gouge my eys out than knowingly add cat or gog poop to my veg garden.

mothergoose_nz, Nov 19, 9:12am
remember toxoplasmosis.damages eyes pernamently in children.just have to wash hands after gardening

gilligee, Nov 19, 9:23pm
Wouldn't you always wash your hands after gardening!

mottly, Nov 19, 9:33pm
and yet many countries use human poop on their vege - feel like chinese takeaways anyone!

mottly, Nov 19, 9:34pm
and yet unwashed fruit/veg, and eating meat that isn't cooked properly, are by far the most common cause of toxo in humans.

planespotterhvn, Nov 19, 9:37pm
Also implicated in increased rates of suicide and depression, wash hands after handling cats and dogs.

people seriously need to do a little research on how people contract toxo

Years ago when we lived where there was no water or sewerage, we had tank water off the roof, and the waste from our chemical toilet had been dug into the garden for many years - just left a year or two before planting. No illnesses that I can recollect. I would much rather use cat or dog poo in the garden than gouge my eyes out!

And yes, I read the Wikipedia article on toxoplasmosis and agree that it seems that ingesting cat poo is a really bad idea - just as eating underdone pork and lamb is. But I shouldn't think there would be any harm in eating vegetables grown in soil fertilised by well rotted cat poo!

redhead96, Nov 19, 9:58pm
It is when other peoples cats poo in your garden as you do not know if their cat is wormed.

venna2, Nov 19, 10:30pm
Yes, but surely the danger is only if you come in direct contact with the poo! Not if it's simply part of the compost!

mottly, Nov 19, 11:24pm
worming doesn't kill toxo lol!Poop rots down really fast in dirt - you are right venna2, you need to come into direct contact with it.

lythande1, Nov 20, 4:36am
No-one suggests you eat the cat poo, or not wash your hands after applying it, or weeding round it.
Poo breaks down into nutrients, regardless what animal it comes from.
Geez, some people.

junie2, Nov 20, 5:47am
Yes, some people! I mean, who would WANT to use cat ( any sole carnivore ) poop! Sometimes we have to put up with it in our patches, but basically, it's easier and safer toput itthe rubbish bin with dog poop or down the sewage system with human excrement. #14 - One of the reasons many westerners get crook guts when they go to the east is because much of Asia uses human waste. Their gut systems are used to those bugs - ours aren't. But each to their own - if you like the idea of cat poo in your garden , then of course use it.

A dead cat under the lemon tree will work wonders. on two counts.
