Anyone had any luck with them! I'm in the Coromandel, so similar climate to Aucks.got cape goosberries, they do fine, but planted an Invicta last year.just hoping.!Are the red varieties any hardier!I've been told to place bags of ice around the roots during winter, to give them a good 'frost', which I'll try.Any ideas, tips!

I've had a plant in for 2 years now. It's grown well, but no fruit. Fruiting is apparently a bit random, you may get fruit but not every year.I'll give it another 2 years.and let you know.
Ice! Forget it, frost lingers.ice melts. They'll either fruit or they won't.

I am in BOP and have both Invicta and Pax. Had them for 3or4 years no luck with fruit. Back in Europe I had fruit every year so I am putting it down to climate

thanks.oh well - no harm in trying huh. I just bought a pax to plant, guess if nothing else, they're a pretty neat looking plant.the garden store lady told me we should be putting phosphorous around the roots now.just in case nobody knew :)

They don't really fruit in Auckland I live on the North Shore and tried to grow them for years but we don't get enough frosts to develop the fruit.

forgot to say have tried the ice around the roots in winter it didn't help where I live is a frost area and we often have temps under 0 in winter during the night but it never continues during the day which I think is the problem

oh, bummer.think I'll skip the ice then, just enjoy 'looking' at the bush's instead!

I wonder if digging them out and putting them in a freezer (in a bag) for few days would do the trick. Might try it with one plant.

that's a good idea, I noticed in the UK many people keep them in pots - a vertical freezer and a potted one would be pretty easy to 'freeze' over winter :)

Gooseberries (and currants for that matter) need around 1000 hours of winter chilling, that's under 7 degrees . Might be quite challenging in Auckland!
