Housing Corp and private owners fencing

steve__o, Apr 2, 7:48am
Hi guys, I own my own house and want to put up a fence (we want to get a dog. 2 of the 3 boundarys are Housing Corp) has anyone dealt with them in regards to putting up a fence! I want to do all the labour myself to cut costs (and can show them fences that I have put up)

Have you dealt with them in this kind of situation! I have spoken to the local housing corp branch and have been given conflicting stories.

There is a fencing act, and it covers you and them I suggest you get a copy, they are required to pay half, but they always try to squirm their way out of it.

Pop into your nearest CAB they have leaflets covering the act. However I am sure the Housing corp are fully aware of their responsibilities under the act and will come to the party. However you need to follow the formal processes outlined in the Act which basically includes writing a letter outloining the type of fence and the estimated costs. - the HC will need to pay half or put up an alternative.

Just be aware I not sure nowadays but,the HC considered a 1 metre high netting fence did the trick.

Neighbours (even HC) DO have to contribute to the cost of a fence that is acceptable to both parties, although they do NOT have to contribute towards more than a basic, suitable fence.

And a basic suitable fence is one that is in keeping with all of the other fencing in the close neighbourhood so "a 1 metre high netting fence" is not acceptable.> Might have been 40 years ago but not these days.

However OP I suspect you might have problems if you want to contribute your labour as your share of the cost. Talk to them.

Yip talk to them first, if you build it and then talk to them you wont get half. They shafted me on my first fence. the second i got almost half the cost. 3rd which is yet to come they will be paying half.
Make sure you add half ya labor into the cost
They wont be happy if you use untreated timber so they wont pay half.

They have to obey the Fencing Act same as anyone else - seems you may not understand how it works

i am going down this issue also as my boundary is shared with 4 other people up a driveway so im yet to know how to approach the situation but i heard that you have to use the cheapest materials you can get
