Gardenias

I don't seem to have much luck with them. I have two bushes, the larger older bush had leaves turning yellow.Thought it might be not enough water 'cos of the drought, so gave it some fertiliser and a good water, and it's smaller garden mate too. After a couple of weeks (and more water) both plants had new green leaves, no sign of yellow, then two days ago all the leaves on the older plant starting falling off! The ground is littered with them. What could be wrong with it. The little bush appears fine.

I only feed my Gardenias with sheep pellets and Sequestrene.
Gardenias are acid loving plants, so an all purpose garden fertilizer, wont be good for Gardenias.
Mine are a sizable hedge now and I have to hack them back with shears to keep the paths free.

I had one which did nothing. Was over at stepsons house in Tauranga years ago, he is no gardener, had one under house eves, in narrow bed, then concrete path.It was very large, covered in blooms and healthy.I put a couple of large rocks under mine, as decided it must like warmth.Give it Epsom salts, and bit of fert, and is lovely now - flowers really well, for a long period.Must take some cuttings, as have property on the market at present, and love them.

Gardenias grow like weeds in Brisbane, & I don't think they get any special care. To grow in NZ I only grow in pots & even then they would frost in the winter if I don't put them inside. MInd you I live in Southland!
