Makita kp0800 vs DW680 dewalt planner

hi, i am a 2nd year apprentice in carpentry and i am looking for a planer that planes atleast 2mm deep. my reasearch on the internet has shown that the makita kp0800 and dewalt dw680 are the two best on the market for my price range. but i cant deside which one. they are both around the $300 dollar mark. im getting told by other builders to just go with makita but i know dewalt also has some good tools.

I've always brought either Makita or Hitatchi tools. Only problem I had with my Makita planner was when I got some wool insulation caught in the bearings, so my fault rather than the tool. The Amercia brands weren't around or were too expensive when I started out 20 odd years ago, so have never really appealed.

I don't know many builders that use DeWalt. They aren't stocked by Power Tool Centres, and talking to one of their repair guys, they get a lot of DeWalt in for repair. Some DeWalt tools are good - their routers, for instance, but I think mainly as they are rebadged tools (Elu in the case of some of their routers). Their batteries don't seem to last long. Personally, of the two, I'd definitely go with Makita. Have you looked at the Bosch planer too!

I also like the Makita and Dewalt range. The reason so many (like the Power Tool Centres) advise against the Dewalt brand is that they dont have the agency for them or their markup isnt as good as they get on the other brands.
I have the Makita KP800 series but It is the 4mm cut, (well worth it over the 2mm) and am very happy with it. The chute does clog up when planing wet timber but apart from that it is an excellent machine.

Makita. No contest.

Makita isvery Chinesey now, not like the old stuff, most of my gear is dewalt, batteries have had a thrashing for 5 years and only just giving up, I'd def have a look at the Bosch professional range, its the blue gear rather than green.
