The proper answer is no the real answer depend on what others get away with in your area. Normally if your council allows building on the boundary the wall must be fire rated.

you can put a garden shed against the boundy fence they do not need a permit

No you can't,a shed that is exempt from having a permit has to be it's height away from the boundary. Google building consent exemptions on the Dept. of Building web site for the rules.

Thanks - was thinking the wood shed up against the wooden fence would be seen as a fire hazard.

I have one up against my boundary fence (a shelter with a roof). I want to build a metal frame with wheels and mesh (kind of cage) which I can move around and cover with polythene.

My neighbour has made the space between his garage and our boundary fence into a wood shed. Doesn't thrill me much as its very close to my house. He's a good old bugger or I'd let the council know.
rules are made to be ignored, idiots in offices don't tell me what i can and cant do :)

most of the wood sheds i've seen, tend to incorporate a fence or two into their construction !

How about two 7 square meter sheds that are very close together!

Our neibours 'wood shed' which consists of our fence with two poles out the front then a sheet of wooden ply attached to the top. My problem is the wood has been stacked hard against the fence and is pushing the fence pailings off! They will be the first to complain when the wood gets down and my small dog can get through! What should I do!

You need to have a word to them.

freestar5 - it will also accelerate rotting of the fence, even tanalised timber, so tell neighbour that you won't be liable for repair/replacement. You could then negotiate percentages. Where does water run to off the plywood 'roof'>

Council have said that the 'temporary shelter' (wwod shed) is fine but not the tin shed. I dont really care about the tin shed its the fire wood shed I dont like -busting and rotting my fence and posing a fire hazard.lol you gotta laugh dont ya!- Neighbours wont move it because they dont want the ugly pile of wood anywhere else.

If the palings are pushing off, the nails are probably not the annular groove type, Get some with the ridges on the shanks and they won't pull out so easily.

'Help' the palings to come off. Then start helping yourself to the free supply of wood. What are they going to do! You're burning the evidence.

Love it! Might start with a few pieces each day to top up our pile, lol

To relieve any doubt contact your local council. They will be better able to advise you. I do believe that the Whangarei district council has some very demanding bylaws. good luck. Mr thecritic

We negotiated with the neighbour to put in wood shed between garage and fence. We fixed up the couple of rotting boards before construction, and put in ridged nails on the rest. It is properly roofed with gutter and downpipe to keep water away from her side. And as she has a bigger fireplace, any bits of wood that won't fit in ours we chuck over the fence and she uses lol.

Agree - tends to depend on the neighbours. Ours is right against the fence, but we disturb/annoy no-one and if the situation changes, it's easy to take apart.

The instructions that come with this shed are prttey vague and horrible. They need to at least have a minimum amount of written instruction, the pictures arent usually helpful. Just do yourself a favor and go out to buy some lumber and build a real shed lol.

Jim, love the look and feel of your project. I plan on moydfiing it for a non-passive shed with planters to replicate the in-ground look. No concrete for me I am a wood guy. Thrilled to see you give mention to Rob Roy. He used to be a customer of mine when I ran a hardware store in UPstate NY (see Plattsburgh) He does not get the credit he deserves. I now live in DE and am looking at the project as a playhouse for my kids. Wish you well on the hobbit house.. I will check in on your page from time to time and might try and be one of your first weekend tennants.
