Damn Liverwort!

Whats with this plant/fungus/whatever!

I have sprayed, and dug the past 2 years but i cant get rid of it. Even tried the white vinegar on it.
The dug up/scraped off liverwort dosent break down, and I am left with a pile of the mad stuff - clumps of matted dirt I cant re-use.
Everything else all cleared except for this pest!
Now spring and fresh new growth of Liverwort, and strange that it is most abundant along my spray lines!
Can the use of organic off the shelf weedkiller be encourageing liverwort growth!

yes, dam annoying. I bought a lot of potted plants from a local grower and it was hiding in the soil. So hard to get rid of thats for sure

I heard from someone who has a show gardenthat Roundup promotes liverwort.I think they are right. Not sure of the science in it - he says it feeds off the something or other in it!

I agree, you tend to get liverwort where round up has been sprayed, i've worked at lots of plant nurseries and this has happened at every single one of them, wait till you start getting the khaki slime stuff we all call gorilla snot, also shows up in rounduped areas usually where theres lots of water, eg irrigated plants

Use Yates Surrender Moss killer. Drown the Liverwort with it, scrape it off when it is dead and then keep a vigil eye on it. Spot spray as necessary. It is a dog of a weed to get in your garden. Ours came via a pot plant from a garden centre, they should know better

Mine came in a pot from the garden centre too, although at the time I didn't know what liverwort was, never encountered it in my UK gardens.
I'm not joking when saying it's covered around 60% of my acre garden. I've been treating it for what seems like forever!
I didn't know about the round up connection though, but looking around the garden, I can see places that I have used round up and the concentration of liverwort is worse in those areas. Bah!

As I said every nursery i've worked at has had this problem, It is a weed, and it is a problem I'm afraid the only solution for plant nurseries would be to go around and spray the top of each plant pot, we have tried this and it is a slow and painstaking process, you have to make sure the plant isnt sprayed while the liverwort is. quite hard to do with things like grasses and flaxs. I think most nurseries arnt going to be doing this on a regular basis :-)
