Kumi kumi which is the real one? (with pictures)

canz, Feb 17, 9:20am
I have grown seeds sold as Kumi kumi, but the color and shape seem wrong. They are oval sort of egg shaped, with light coloured ribs, well like this
1. http://prntscr.com/t2cx5but looking in google images, there's also this one2, http://www.egmontseeds.co.nz/vegetables/pumpkin-kumi-kumi the description says it grows to 30 cm long, and thats not it I'm sure.and this one http://a4dibbleplants.co.nz/kumi-kumi-p-738.html3. http://www.ginnysherbs.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/product_full/kumi-kumi,%20green.JPG which I suppose mature into these http://gstuff.co.nz/shop/garden/index.php!main_page=product_info&products_id=590&zenid= but again the descriptions says mature they are 30 cm, I thought they were the size of a large grapefruit.

I'm having to hand pollinate my "might be Kumi Kumi" they taste ok, but not the same as i remember, I'd like someone to tell me which is the right shape, and colour, I'm going to do my darnest to get the right seed this year, and grow as many as I can next year, even though I live along, 1 oe 2 kumo kumo a week, just isn't enough for me :)

Looks exactly what I have been given as a Kumi Kumi. Incidently - how do you eat yours canz! Prepared to share a recipe or two! My kumi kumi has been sitting on the bench for a few days waiting for inspirATION.

The first image I mean. Quite fat = not so long (compared to girth) as some of those other images.

cinderellagowns :
Cooking. Half, steam or biol with a bit in salty water, add lots of butter.
Half, salt pepper, bacon slices, wrap in tin foil, cook in oven, or roat with pork or chicken :)
A bulb under flower is the male flower, a small kumi kumi under flower is femail flower. Pick male flower, take all petals off it, push male boy looking bit into female girl looking bit, rub boy bit around outside of girl bit, just like making love, pumpkin style. :)
Bop. Like i said, I have to hand pollinate, since the shortage of bee's, you can also use a kids pain brush, just rub gently around the inside of flower, and do the same on girl flowers
Boy even looks like a penis, http://www.giantpumpkins.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/male_flower.jpg Girl looks like its made for the boy flower. http://giantveggiegardener.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/female-flower-stigma.jpg

lol Pumpkin love that's clever. wish I had thought of that cinderellagowns.

I had only male flowers for the longest time, only in the past 3 weeks, inChristchurch, have females started showing, I have cut 6 green ones(all so far). I just hand pollinated 1 flower this morning, and cab see about 5 very small female flowers on the end of the vine.
Thinking about it, I didn't get any female flowers until I picked the tips of the 2 main runners about a month ago. Now I'm getting lateral runners from most leaves of those main ones, and they have the female flowers. I had 3 female flowers I didn't hand pollinate and they just turned yellow and dried up when they are about golf ball sized.

I just googled lack of flowers on pumpkin, and it said "I recommend a dose of Phosphorous fertilizer. which promotes flowering, and reducing nitrogen, which promotes leaf growth"
So look through your stash of fertilizers, at the NPK ratings, and look for one with highest middle number or equal 1st and 2nd numbers.
Looking at my stash Bonemeal is the winner, I also read elsewhere that Cow manure is a good all-rounder and high inPhosphorus, but don't have any :(
N Nitrogen % P Phosphorus % K Potassium
(Potash) %
Bloodmeal 12 0 0
Bonemeal3.5 18 0
Fish, Blood & Bone 6 6 6
Cow manure 112.

ne last thing, from googling, Phosphorus leeches out of the soil easily, so its worth applying often.

About seeds, if the bonemeal works, you betcha I'll have seeds to sell :)
