I need to insert a T into an existing (well-secured) downpipe, so I can add a dropper to a gutter to handle excess water. It looks like it can be done with the various sliding fit joiners Marley makes, but I'm sure there's a right way and wrong way to do it. Anyone got advice (or a URL) on the proper way! Thanks,

What size / type of downpipe!

80mm, round, Marley.

So is the problem that it's so well secured that you can't see how to get the Tee in!

I'll have to cut a section of the downpipe out. It'll have to be long enough to get the T in (* including * the parts of the T that will overlap the pipe), but then it all has to join up again. With the various joiners I can see how I'll be able to do it, but I just figure there'll be a "best" way to do it.

Cut out the minimum length of downpipe to fit the Tee into. Carefully slice off a little less than half of the top of the Tee using the thinnest sawblade you can find. Clip the main part of the Tee into place into the gap in the downpipe, ensuring you use plenty of Marley welding solvent on the joints. Refit the top of the Tee onto the main part and the downpipe using a bead of welding solvent to glue the 2 parts back together. Hold it all in place with tape or cable ties until the solvent is fully set!

Would normally cut out a section so pipe will be correct length when fitted inside the sockets of the Tee. Usually enough play to get the Tee in at one end and to push the top section of pipe up enough to get the other end in.

Thanks tmenz, interesting thinking, but I don't think I'd go that way. Yeah, russ18, I just don't think I'm going to have that much play (too much to explain). I'm thinking the joiners will give me the play, as their flanges are quite long so should let me slide them on the pipe, far enough to put the T in place, then slide them back off the pipe a bit to join it all up.
