Are you supposed to !

spacekids, Mar 8, 8:39am
I don`t if I did I would lose any recordings I make during the night.

wayne472, Mar 8, 8:54am
We put ours into stand by mode, the recordings still go on then!

lythande1, Mar 8, 1:10pm
No, but I do turn off the TV

cantabman1, Mar 8, 1:52pm
All turned off at the wall each night. That way, any electrical surge, or faulty electronics are safe when i sleep.Ive seen too many sad events of fires caused by leaving tv's and electronic equipment on stand by.
When installer recently replaced our 9 yr old decoder and remote, he suggested we leave it all on as it would last longer without faults.i consider 9 yrs not too bad.[ex owner appliances retailer]

eljayv, Mar 8, 1:56pm
Apparently sky decoders use a lot of power so mine is on and off a lot

destiny6nz, Mar 8, 1:58pm
I turn off the tv and the freeview. I would turn off sky if I had it because of the power

elect70, Mar 8, 3:06pm
I dontmost ofsport i want to see is onduring the weehours .You can probaly save$10 a year turning it off atnight

sparkyz, Mar 8, 8:14pm
TV, DVD, stereo, Wii, computer all turned off at wall when not being used.
PVR is only left on if recording.
Safety, not power saving is the reason. Family friends had TV fire late one night a few years ago.

..pip.., Mar 9, 6:34am
Hahahaha like I could be arsed to go around every night and every morning turning off and on the dozens of appliances we have plugged in.All for the sake of what $25 a year.We aren't that hard up!Plus we have smoke alarms, insurance and backups of all photos and documents in other locations.

liggy2, Mar 9, 6:42am
I do but as others have stated you wont save much power-perhaps 10 cents a week.

cantabman1, Mar 9, 7:34am
I dont turn it all off, as some appliances dont have a problem with fires, and also like a fridge; its impractical. I do it simply as safety measure and not for any power savings.
I certainly hope i never have to call 111 as i have been through enough with the Earthquakes of recent times.

wessex, Mar 9, 7:38am
Don't turn a thing off. have protectors on each plug.

thistle4, Mar 9, 8:24am
We record a lot at night, so the decoder is left on. We do have good surge protectors though and smoke alarms.

cantabman1, Mar 9, 9:37am
Surge protectors are just that, they only protect against a power surge, NOT AN ELECTRICAL FAULT[short]

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 9, 9:39am
Yup. Flick it off at the wall. All those glowing red eyes were getting to me.

rsr72, Mar 9, 10:32am
#16- .Plus they're showing the burglars what you've got.

oh_hunnihunni, Mar 9, 10:46am
You really think any self respecting buglar (on purpose, that missing 'r') is going to risk breaking into this tiny wee box to score my $249 Warehouse 19"! Even if it does have freeview AND a dvd built in!

Maybe I should buy a new nighty just in case.

elect70, Mar 9, 2:14pm
^^ if its worth a$thedopers will steal itthey arent fussy ,dofewhousesa day& itpays for theirdopeNeed a big dog

thistle4, Mar 9, 2:47pm
I'm well aware of that. However if I worried about every appliance causing a short I would have to turn off the fridge and freezer too. My electrics are checked annually (the bonus of an electrician for a Landlord).

ryanm2, Mar 9, 3:44pm
Whats it like being paranoid!

velenski, Mar 10, 8:41am
the sky is always off at night .thats why its dark.

michellew2k, Mar 10, 8:58am
we have a RCD switch which trips if there are any electrical issues. If youre worried get one installed.

lilyfield, Mar 10, 5:04pm
the only thing running at night is the security alarm, fridge and freezer
And yes I am a power nazi

ryanm2, Mar 10, 6:24pm
RCD's are designed to protect the end user not the cable supplying the power. If you were to have a fault on your cable, which is highly unlikely these days with modern wiring your RCD may not trip.

The ideal thing to get installed on your switchboard if you are concerned , which is seems quite a few are is a surge diverter in case of lightning, or any power surge to your house.
