My mum loves sweet peas and tries to grow them every year. The first year she had a beautiful show, but for the last 3 years they have not come to much at all.She has fertilized and watered and removed the pods after they have flowered. Is she doing something wrong!Any help would be much appreciated.Oh, they are in a sunny but sheltered area so they don't get blown about at all.

Sow the seeds in position in the Autumn for beautiful plants in the following Spring.Just plant & leave.

My dear old Mum had great success growing sweet peas but she said they were gross feeders and the soil needed a huge amount of nutrients to maintain flower growth if they are grown in the same plot. She said 'Plant sweet peas-plant a possum' and she did. Well not always a dead possum - sometimes a dead hedgehog - but she would bury it in the sweet pea bed every winter. And lots of manure - sheep or cow- and seaweed fertilizer - always put into the soil in the late autumn, early winter. We children used to call her garden 'the shit bed' but it worked because she won prizes for her sweet peas. She only ever used her own seeds which she chipped the edge with a sharp knife and planted out several times from early July-early August. They flowered continually from early Oct-late Feb.

Is she growing them in the same position each year! Monoculture doesn't do well as the soil gets infested by toxins from the repetition of same plant use. In addition, unless she enriches the soil using compost, there is little or no humus, and sweet peas need rich soil.

Always plant where they get a good dose of morning sun.

Is she sowing fresh seed or planting new plants each season! March/ April is a good time to sow seed. I sprinkle a good dose of blood & bone along the row, hoe it in & give it a good watering a week or sow before sowing seed. I plant in the same place each year with no problems. You can use seed from the flower pods left on the plants, make sure they are mature & brown & dried off.
