We are trying to find a columnar type of crabapple to finish an avenue planting. It has small reddish fruit and is hardy. We need the botanical name of any columnar shaped crabapples i.e Malus .I have photos but not sure how/where to post them here.Thanks. Jill

One crabapple that comes to mind and was very popular when I worked in a garden centre is=Malus Jack Humm
Maybe you could just look up crabapple or malus. Google is your friend

Sounds to me like it might be one of the Ballerina series - they have been around quite a few years now, with new additions to the range from time to time. They were bred potentially for small town gardens and courtyards but they can be quite useful in narrow border situations. Don't get very big height wise and just have relatively short fruiting spurs as opposed to serious branching. Does this sound like it might be the case!

I have a Ballerina crabapple. Have had it for several years (more than 10). It crops really well, too, I'm actually just about to get stuck into my 2kg crop for crabapple jelly! Hasn't grown terrifically tall and has stayed narrow - about 6 feet high and about 18 or 24 inches wide at its widest point. It would be your best bet. Also has lovely big brightish pink flowers at the end of winter into Spring.

lemming2 - that one is Maypoleand does produce the most wonderful crabapple jelly! The crabs are the best IMO the eaters (at least, the originals) left much to be desired.

Thanks for the advice all .will investigate further. Not Jack Humm but that is a great variety for here in central Otago.

Malus tschonoskii is stunning and very upright, or look for Malus Red Top which has lovely burgundy new growth. The Ballerina crabapple varieties 'Maypole' and 'Samba' are great options too - these grow sort of a in a pole form, rather than as an upright tree.
