Has anyone grown Tomatillos successfully.

I have four plants that have lots of flowers for over a month now. They are a metre high and look great but no sign of any fruit.

Actually had the same problem with my aspargus peas, masses of tiny red flowers that amounted to nothing.

Tomatoes and chillies going strong, all in the same area.

Yup. Grew them in Hamilton years ago. Had more fruit than i knew what to do with. They self seeded for ages too, which was nice.
I can't remember exactly, but i think the fruit came a bit later in the season. Do you have fruit forming!

What are tomatillos! You don't mean tamarillos! Maybe tomatillos are extra small tomatoes!

Yes, my parents used to grow Tomatillos for me, we always had a bumper crop they really do grow like weeds.

I grew tomatillos last year too - my aunt gave me the seedlings, and raved about the "peppery taste" but I wasn't too fussed on them. From memory they didn't start doing anything with the fruit production til late summer, and then they went really well.

Yes, grow like crazy here in Chch too. Grande Verde are best; less fddly to prepare/eat.

It looks like I just have to be patient. That's fine, there will be a glut of tomatoes any day now so the tomatillos will be fine in a month or two.
Might put another 4 plants down now.

This is the variety I'm trying.

Aren't tomatillos very similar to cape gooseberries!

parsondian, Jan 27, 8:18am
The seeds just seemed to appear every year by themselves, we used to find tomatillo seedlings all over the garden years after our first planting!

junie2, Jan 27, 11:16am
Thanks - will check'em out.

Like cape gooseberries venna, only more tomatoey in taste, and used green I think. They're on my list of 'Things to try one day'!

wilson16, Jan 29, 7:12pm
IT'S HAPPENING
Tiny green lanterns, 2 cm long. Thought they were more flowers.
Does anyone now how much longer from here.
Frantically watering and feeding.

oh_hunnihunni, Jan 29, 7:16pm
If they're like my capes about a month and continuous.

junie2, Feb 16, 9:58pm
They're so easy-care, just chill out and it'll happen - promise! They get sticky when they're ready - under that lantern, andtheylllook like a pale green tomato.
