absolutely.
if it's not already a requirement, every rental property should have to have them installed immediately and for owner occupier homes it should be a requirement for them to be installed before any transfer.

do they have a battery backup - this fire started in the meterbox, I'd assume the main poles blew quite quickly after that

Yes they do. They can also be linked, so if one goes off, they all go off. Very useful when a fire at night, starts a distance from the bedrooms.

Well one of the lessons could be, that if you have an older house with original wiring and switchboard, it might be a good idea to have it checked over by an electrician.
