Magnolia tree

I have a tall, spindly magnolia tree about 8 metres high. It got that way trying to compete with huge acmena trees in the neighbours' section. The neighbours have agreed to take out the acmenas shortly and replace them with pittosporums or something similar. When this is done, will the magnolia survive if I reduce its height to about half of what it currently is, or will that kill it?

We had a similar problem with our Magnolia with eucalyptus trees next door. It remained quite stunted. Once they dropped them the magnolia took off and started to look healthy again.

General rule of thumb is one-third/year.

We have a magnolia close to our pool which drops both leaves and flowers in to the water - i hack it back quite viciously to try and help with pool maintenance but it keeps on going and going - just a big weed in my opinion!
