Consequences of using unpermitted fire?

datoofairy, Nov 30, 2:47am
We had a new log burner installed a couple of weeks ago, however I have been told I'm not allowed to use it until the permit is signed off, which wont be until next week.
We are cold. Its not as bitterly cold here as it has been, but this is a cold house and Miss 12 and I always feel the cold.I only have a small 2 bar heater that only heats the lounge, just, and is very expensive to run.
I'm so tempted to light the fire. Its so ridiculous sitting here cold when theres a brand new, fully installed fire sitting in front of us.
Will they still sign off the permit if I do light it!

i guess insurance would be an issue if something happened

shaun16, Nov 30, 3:53am
i wouldnt. not worth the risk. imagine if insurance doesnt pay out because its not signed off etc

Just use the bloody thing,if there was a fireit would have to be proved it wasthenew fire unitat fault . Just because some council erk hasnt got off his butt tosign it off doesnt make it unsafe .

bantamus, Nov 30, 4:25am
fire forensics would soon work it out

not worth the risk unless .

has a final inspection actually been done and it been approved verbally

comes down to your choice

I would start it anyway, how could a newly installed log burner burn your house down !
Your 2 bar heater is probably a bigger risk !
Of course they will still sign off the permit if you do light it!

+1. Just use it!

When my woodfire was installed, I was in the same position as you, it had been professionally installed so I knew it was safe. The inspector didnt remark on the ashes in it when he signed it off a week later.

If the council is dragging its feet, ring your mayor and tell him nicely you are going to the media with your cold story.

Exactly.

If it was installed by plumber or installation specialist then go ahead and use it.

If the council clown comments on the ashes just say the installer tested it.

Plumber. Why do people think fireplaces are a plumbing g thing. It's not. Wetbacks, perhaps. Actual fireplaces. No.

Why is it taking so long for them to sign off!
When ours was installed they came the next day ( i know different councils) but still a couple of weeks.

I know they aren't open in the weekend, but remember the squeeky wheel gets the oil. ie ring up everyday and see how it is progressing and just be a real pain in their butt.Ask to see the Manager etc.Ring up your local councillor/mayor (or both of them) and state your situation and ask for a written response/explanation (good to use with the media if you go that far).Whether or not to light it - your choice, but I know what I would do.However, the big problem is if anything untoward happens and an insurance claim is involved.

artemis, Dec 1, 6:29am
When I had mine put in, the installer made quite a decent sized fire to test it.

punkinthefirst, Dec 1, 8:27am
Maybe because some plumbers are also roofers and fire installers!
Well, they are, in my town, anyway.

datoofairy, Dec 1, 8:37am
Thanks everyone for your replies.
Yesterday I lent our heater to someone with a new baby, thinking it was going to be a warm weekend. However this morning we were cold, so I went ahead and lit it.Wow, its fantastic! We had to have all the doors and windows open for the first hour or so due to fumes burning off, but once that was over, the heat coming off it was amazing.
I knew the fire wouldnt turn right down due to the clean air laws, but I am surprised at how little it turns down. The control lever only goes half way to minimum.I can see through a gap that theres big bolt stopping it closing any further, so after the inspection I may give that a wee tweaking.Otherwise we will go through a few hectares of tree's next winter.

And maybe because 30 years ago there was no requirement for a consent for a free standing fire installation but insurance required that it be installed by a plumber.

aredwood, Dec 2, 7:44am
Im a Plumber myself and one of the mandatory unit standards as part of my apprenticeship was, Install solid fuel burner.

pandora10, Dec 2, 8:23am
If in the unlikely event the house burns down you will cover the replacement cost!Sure as hell the Insurance Company will not.

michellew2k, Dec 2, 8:27am
Its not THAT cold. Harden up and put a jersey on and wait for everything to be signed off lol

Just have a bucket of water, or hose, ready nearby.
