Nectar feeder and waxeyes?

supra_luva, Oct 30, 2:43am
Does anyone know if waxeyes would drink sugar water from a Tui nectar feeder?

They probably would - if they knew what it was. Try putting one of those fat feeder balls next to it, once they work it out they should go for sugar water.
A couple of waxeyes that I was feeding over winter:

Hi there
The Tuis have to fight off the waxeyes to get to the nectar feeder in our garden. So cute they do a little vibration dance.

Thanks, thats great to hear . I want to buy one as the sugar water in my bowl gets washed out when it rains or sometimes the wind tips up the bowl. We dont have tuis here but do get lots of waxeyes. I wasnt sure if it was designed for other birds to access.

They eat all kinds of fruit, bananas, apple etc. Yeah - I guess they'd be a potential pain for orchardists.
Aussie imports all right. This one was hanging around - wearing an aussie cricket uniform:

When we were in Payson Arizona our friends we stayed with had feeders for the humming birds they hover and poke their long beaks through a hole to drink the water sugar mixture they were using 10 lb of sugar a week .Even with digital camera on fastest setting wings were just a blurr.

Yep, they have to be the hardest to photograph!
We had several feeders when living in TX. Boy are they territorial over the feeders except for the two weeks prior to flying over the Gulf of Mexico in Fall. That is the only time they will share a feeder - they are 'topping up' for the long flight in much the same way the monarch butterflies did.

The only problem we found was once the bees became Africanized they took over the feeders.

My daughter has a little hummer in CA that will drink from a container in her hand. Took her a long time before he would but it's so cute!

Shame it's just orchards and not humans lol actually sad it orchards and not some humans ;)

I think you are MEANT to use sugar water in the nectar feeders. Apparently honey water is not recommended for some reason.

Wonder if it's better to put out sugar water made with raw sugar (rather than white sugar) so there's more nutrients in it.

I don't fed the birds at this time of the year, I reckon they ought to find their own food now, or they will become too dependent on humans.
I only feed a few months over the Winter
